Abstrakt: The article discusses the role of Mexican Americans in the history of Houston, Texas. Particular focus is given to contributions of this community to the city's economy and culture and to instances of racial oppression and discrimination in Houston history. Details on Mexican American businesses and churches are presented. Other topics include the effects of the Great Depression and World War II on the city's Mexican American community, the Chicano Movement of the 1960s-1980s, political participation among Mexican Americans and other Latinos, and anti-immigrant sentiment in the U.S.
