Abstrakt: The article discusses the ostracization of Elizabeth Small, wife of the Executive Council's clerk in Upper Canada after she publicly ignored the Attorney-General's wife during a Christmas ball in 1799. It focuses on the attempt of Lieutenant-Governor Francis Gore to remove the stigma placed on Small to remove the social tension that is opposed by the wife of the future Chief Justice, Anne Powell. It examines the effort of women in the elite class to protect their social positions that politicians have no power to influence.
