The article discusses historic barns in Montana. Emphasis is given to the workmanship involved in barn design and construction and to the historical significance of these structures. According to the authors, the best way to preserve historic barns in the 21st century is to find alternative uses for them as developments in agriculture, technology, and barn design threaten to supersede them. Details related to the history of barn design in Montana are presented, including log-crib barn designs and ethnic barn types built by French Canadian and European settlers. Other topics include roof styles, horse barns, and dairy barns. |
