Abstrakt: The article assesses the economic, political and social implications of the integration of Spain into the European Union (EU). Spain had to overcome economic obstacles after joining the EU. Spain added the peseta to the European Monetary System which subsequently created high interest rates. The country achieved its structural reforms and convergence goals by mid-1998 and became a net beneficiary of EU funds since 1986. The political element of the EU integration required the non-proliferation of mass destruction, domestic market, trading agreement, financial aid, and foreign relations with other countries. Treaties such as the Maastricht Treaty were adopted for freedom, security and justice space.
