The article discusses the development of rangelands in the area of Fort Pierre, South Dakota, following the opening of the lands of the Great Sioux Reservation to the public in 1890. It comments on population growth, infrastructure, and transit, particularly railroads. The author examines the livestock industry and reflects on the activities of merchant and stockman George Mathieson, who helped organize the First National Bank of Fort Pierre. The Ghost Dance movement among the Sioux Indians is also mentioned. |
