This article describes a plant tissue swelling abnormality called galls. The condition, which can also be caused by mechanical injury, is attributed mostly to over 2,000 species of bacteria, nematodes, fungi and mites in the U.S. Galls appear mostly on leaves and stems and can also be seen in branches, roots, fruits, trunks and flowers, with specific characteristics linking the host plant and the gall-inducing organism. Insects cause damage such as premature defoliation and leaf discoloration. |
