The aim of this case series is to demonstrate the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in preoperative assessment and planning for the extraction of impacted mandibular third molar teeth. The review presents four clinical cases in which CBCT imaging was obtained in addition to panoramic films, to identify the position of the impacted mandibular third molar in relation to the inferior alveolar nerve. These cases offer a rationale for the use of CBCT and demonstrate its utility. The technology assists the clinician to better understand the anatomy, plan treatment and obtain informed consent.
