The article presents a history of the medical treatment of human deformities and monstrosities in Colombia toward the end of the 19th century. The practice of classifying bodies as morbid, deformed, or monstrous is discussed, and the issue of recording normal and pathological bodies is analyzed through the study of the development of statutes of physical normalcy. Medical, social and psychological implications of this classification are discussed. Texts from the era are used in the analysis, as are photographs and other primary medical sources. |
