The article examines the choices made for the illustration program for the book "The Story of Two Lovers," by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini. It states that the overall impression of the illustration program is that the letter exchange offers more interests than sex due to a delicacy in the matter of sexual adventure and adultery. It mentions that the opening miniature's chancery scene is rare and may be a reflection of the patron's particular interests who ordered the manuscript. It says that the avoidance of erotic scene indicates an attempt to beautify the story. It adds that the miniature from the J. Paul Getty Museum strengthens the innovative aspects of the story. It concludes that the illustration program of the book produces an interpretation of the text as an epistolary romance. |
