The article discusses a study on the influence of acute exposure to the trichothecene mycotoxin, deoxynivalenol (DON) on inflammatory responses in pigs. The concentrations of serum or plasma in cytokines and acute-phase proteins and the chemiluminescence of neutrophils from peripheral blood were examined under the study. DON was intravenously injected in seven miniature pigs. It was observed that increased number of neutrophils resulted to increased white blood cell counts at 3, 6, and 12 hour (hr) post-injection (PI). It was found that interleukin (IL)-8 and tumor necrosis factors-α increased at hr PI in the serum. Haptoglobin and serum amyloid A concentrations also increased at 24 hr PI. |
