The article focuses on a Latin elegiac epitaph inscribed on a tombstone located on the island of Jersey which is part of the Channel Islands. According to the author, the inscription was believed to be from the High Middle Ages but was actually written in 1647 for the wife of a pirate, Gartred Amy, who died in childbirth during the English Civil War (1642-1649). It examines various sources concerning the poetic inscription including the books "Carmina Latina Epigraphica (CEL)," published between 1895 and 1897, and the actual tombstone and studies the historical context and circumstances of Amy's death to better understand its significance and possible intentions. |
