An autonomous website is a kind of virtual organization that is self-sustaining through user contributed content. We know that autonomous websites are possible, but we do not know how to build them systematically. In this paper I summarize my research on forums, which indicates that autonomous websites are based on social triodes, where helpful community behavior emerges from individuals that visit initially for selfish reasons and then switch into helpful roles. I discuss the implications of the social triode for developing autonomous websites and end with a brief discussion of how the concept of a social triode generalizes to other kinds of autonomous websites.
