The article details how sand caster Weil McLain reduced scrap by 70 percent with the use of a sand cooler. Due to sand inclusion defects and scrapped castings caused by elevated temperatures, the Michigan City, Indiana-based plant installed a system to cool the return sand from shakeout after passing through a rotary screen. Among its features are continuous sand weighting system and complete control of mixing. The major benefits of the sand cooler include increased green compression strength, reduced moisture content and increased mulling efficiency. |
