In this article the author reports on his travels to the Xinjiang region of China from September 15-26, 2009 to study the Tod alphabet of the Mongolian Oirat language and investigate the status of the nearly extinct Sibo language in northern China. Several topics are discussed, such as the radio program in the Qapqal region in China that broadcasts in the Sibo language, the history of the Sibe language being featured on radio and television programs in China starting in 1950, as well as the history and financial struggles of the Sibo and Manchurian language newspapers "Cabcal Serkin" and "Sibo šu wen." The author also gives a brief history of the Dagur, Sibo, and Oirat people in China and the way their language has developed. |
