The article offers information regarding Nutria (Myocastor coypus) which was infected by the zoonotic disease called Fascioliasis, a disease caused by the trematode Fasciola hepatica, in Uruguay. It mentions that the disease which can be possibly transmitted worldwide, primarily affects domestic ruminants as well as wild herbivorous mammals while placing an estimated 17 million people at risk. It states that 91 human cases were reported in the country between 1909 and 1993. It says that myocastor coypus, a semiaquatic rodent, was highlighted as a zoonotic diseases reservoir. It says that the F. hepatica can be disperse by nutria through the contamination of the natural water sources with their feces. |
