The aim of this essay is to illustrate the importance of using electronic tools, such as maritime databases, in order to re-examine various aspects of the maritime and economic history of Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Within this context large historical statistical series and databases like the 'Sound Toll Registers' may be used in conjunction with smaller ones, like the 'Odysseus, Ionian Maritime History Database', in order to obtain the information we require for the study of the Mediterranean's integration into Western Europe's economic and commercial system during the period from the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century.
