The article focuses on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, the first steel-wire suspension bridge. It was designed in 1867 by German immigrant Joseph Augustus Roebling, with Washington Roebling as chief engineer. A description of the construction process is presented, including the building of the piers, installation of four main steel cables, and the use of 6.8 million pounds of steel wire. The Brooklyn Bridge became a National Historic landmark in 1964. According to the article, it can carry about 145,000 vehicles daily. |
