Background & Purpose: As the United States health care industry undergoes unprecedented change, it is imperative that employers develop and retain highly skilled employees to assist with achieving success in this volatile environment. A Professional Development Track (PDT) program that supports an environment that recognizes discretionary effort, promotes continuous learning, and aids in the professional development of the staff can be a powerful tool to this end. The purpose of this case report was to describe the development and implementation of such a PDT program in a large academic health care system. Long term objectives of the PDT program were to 1 ) enhance the quality of care to the patients served, 2) promote the highest quality of staff, and 3) enhance the institution's reputation within the rehabilitation community. Case Description: This case report describes the development and implementation of a successful PDT program and includes a description of the process, challenges encountered, and recommendations for improvement. A brief example of the PDT application is included. Outcomes: Pre-post testing demonstrated statistically significant improvements in staff 1 ) scholarly activities, 2) involvement in professional organizations, 3) mentoring, and 4) board certifications in subspecialty practice areas. Discussion: A PDT program offers benefits for employees and the institution and may be a valuable program for health care institutions to pursue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
