The article reports on the mass firings of 1,926 teachers in Providence, Rhode Island, despite union-management collaboration efforts. On February 22, 2011, newly elected Mayor Angel Taveras announced that all teachers in the district will get a termination notice, for the sake of managing the city's budget deficit. The mayor's office did disclose that a great number of the teachers will have their jobs back but without the security of seniority under the district's new hiring policies. |
