The article discusses a report on an outbreak of rickettsiosis in red tilapia at a freshwater fish farm in southern Columbia from June to October 2009. It notes that microscopically, only the skin and gills were severely affected with the lesions consisting of severe vacuolation of the cytoplasm of the epidermis and the epithelial cells of the gill. It indicates that the diseases was caused by a microorganism with intracellular location on gill and skin epithelial cells which led to severe epithelial cell damage and electrolyte imbalance. |
