The article discusses the study of the benthic foraminefera of the Southern Ocean deep, carried out by University of Geneva researchers on board the German research ship Polarstern during its 2007-2008 cruise. Researchers collected protists and living benthic foraminiferans in the Lazarev Sea, Atka Bay, Maud Rise and Weddell Sea in depths of 600 to 5,000 meters for comparison with morphospecies gathered in other parts of Antarctica. They identified 99 morphospecies, in addition to unidentified single-chambered species, for further morphological and molecular investigations. The mudballs, komoki, phytodedritus and other specimens gathered will be analyzed to determine their deep-sea microdiversity hotspots. |
