The article provides guidelines on pastel painting, focusing on the use of manufacturer Sennelier's collection of pastels. He discusses the difference between Sennelier's Portrait Set of 40 half sticks and the standard pastels which include its thickness, ease of use as they do not have a paper covering, and are softer thus depositing pigments in an impasto-like way which makes them ideal for highlights. The author includes samples of the different ways the pastels were used as shown in his paintings of "Portrait of Stuart" and "Portrait of Thulasilla." |
