Abstrakt: | The article discusses instances that can elicit false confessions from people on trial. The author cites the case of Beverly Anne Monroe who was accused of murdering her lover Roger de la Burde in 1992. Monroe claimed that she made the confession that she was in the room with de la Burde when he died due to alleged threats from the prosecuting attorney. Monroe was eventually released 11 years later. According to the author, Monroe's case is quite common and people sometimes confess because of the interrogation techniques used by police officers. He adds that false confessions usually come after the defendant has been under heavy stress or when the police show them evidence that supposedly proves the defendant's guilt. |
