Staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), in conjunction with members of several other Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories, is currently characterizing samples of uranium ore concentrate (UOC) originating from a number of countries. The goal of this collaborative endeavor is to define the chemical and morphological attributes of UOC derived from various geographical locations. Statistical assessment of the accumulated data will be performed to identify chemical, physical, and isotopic signatures that might prove useful in correlating UOC attributes with material that is mined from specific ore bodies. Identified chemical and isotopic signatures will enable the sourcing of future interdicted UOC material and aid in the discovery of proliferant networks. The chemical preparation, instrumental analysis, and statistical review of chemical attributes are described herein for a subset of UOC samples from two mining sites in an effort to demonstrate the potential for identifying and employing signatures for the sourcing UOC.
