Abstrakt: The author examines whether the Cremonese master violinmakers made use of natural/unadulterated wood or chemically manipulated wood for their instruments. A discussion of methods of modern materials analysis, such as energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and fast Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy is given. Signs of chemical manipulations were noted on the old wood samples available to the author. An explanation on the theory of the chemical-material paradigm is presented.
