" 'Tain't no tragedy unless you make it one": Imitation of Life, Melodrama, and the Mulatta.

Abstrakt: In this article the author examines aspects of the novel "Imitation of Life," by American author Fannie Hurst written in 1933. The article focuses on Peola, a character in the novel who is of mixed-race. A number of topics are addressed including the influence the "Imitation of Life," had on the "The Bluest Eye," a 1970 novel by Toni Morrison, the film adaptations of "Imitation of Life" by motion picture directors John Stahl and Douglas Sirk, and and the employment of melodrama in the book and the films.
