The article focuses on the letters and first person accounts of Juan Manuel de Viniegra, secretary to Spanish Visitor-General José de Gálvez during his late 18th century expedition to the north of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The author explores the circumstances under which Viniegra wrote thee materials, which included his imprisonment and expulsion from New Spain by order of Gálvez. He also considers the historical context of the 18th century Bourbon reforms throughout Spanish territories. |
