The article discusses the history of 12th century Arab and Islamic medicine by studying the "Chapter on the Conservation of Health" in the book "Kitāb al-taysīr fī l-mudāwāt wa-l-tadbīr" by the Muslim physician and surgeon Avenzoar. The article describes Avenzoar's advice on nutrition, diet, and health maintenance, the preventative measures to prevent illness and disease, and Avenzoar's use of aphorisms to prescribe medicines and encourage healthy behaviors. Other subjects under discussion include the history of Iberian medicine in the Middle Ages, medicine in North Africa, and the influence of Greco-Roman medicine on Arabic medicine. A Spanish translation of the chapter is also presented. |
