The purpose of this research is to investigate disparity in levels of acculturation and body weight among New Jersey foreign-born Hispanic adults by country of origin. Using four years of pooled data (2003-2006) from the New Jersey Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we estimated the association between duration in the US, age at migration, and language preference with body mass index and obesity while controlling for social and demographic characteristics. Our analysis was first conducted on overall foreign-born Hispanic sample and then on subsamples by countries of origin. The results reveal that both the duration in the US and age-at-migration variables are associated with adult body weight. Longer duration in the US is associated with weight increase and higher likelihood of obesity. Younger age at migration is more likely to influence body weight than older immigrating age. These associations vary greatly among Hispanic subsamples, suggesting that foreign-born Hispanics are a heterogeneous population. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
