While current sustainability literature states that the modern waste audit and waste characterization can be completed using inventory lists, the authors found that while inventory lists are a good starting place they do not replace the intimate knowledge of a business' waste generation. The waste characterization and data gathered from performing waste audits in a two rural counties formed the basis for the creation of a Simple Waste Audit software toolkit through a USDA Rural Development grant. One of the problems with common waste audit tools is that they are "generic" and often not as comprehensive or "hands on" as they should be in order to be useful. By physically conducting waste audits for several representative non-residential entities, the authors were able to build interest in businesses performing their own waste audits. This built up interest in using the waste audit toolkit, while further refining the tool itself. The result was a robust, do-it-yourself, easy-to-use, customizable, and best of all free waste audit tool that could be adapted to the needs of the non-residential entity from small home businesses, schools, and churches, to large companies and federal buildings. Do-it-yourself waste audit software and toolkits are especially important to rural solid waste authorities because they do not have the staff necessary to conduct "door to door" waste audits and must rely on the accuracy and participation of residents and businesses to conduct and integrate the results into their day to day operations.
