The Association for the Protection of Environment (A.P.E.), in cooperation with the Enhancement of Integrated Services and Waste Recycling Company (EISWR), have tackled the problem of garbage in Egypt through their transfer and recycling stations in Katamyia, Gouna (a tourist destination), 6th. Of October and Deweka. This was achieved through a comprehensive Zero Solid Waste Strategy in which inefficiencies in the Solid Waste Management System were minimized. The emphasis is on total recycling, resulting in zero waste and elimination of landfills. A.P.E. with EISWR apply the three following programs: Sorting programs:-separation at the source campaigns to the community and stakeholders. Collection programs:-applying a collection system with incentives for both collectors and inhabitants. Recycling programs:-designing and manufacturing over 20 different types of recycling machines: composting, plastic, metal, paper, and textile products that have high market demand. Simple technologies that meet safety parameters are used in manufacturing machinery that is easy to use and reasonably priced for garbage collectors and recyclers. A.P.E. has also produced machinery and developed processes to recycle the reject of rejected plastics, transforming it into useful manhole covers, brick, and separator sheets. Thus, zero waste.
