The article deals with counter-improvised explosive devices (IED) developed and being developed to detect IEDs. It discusses how the proliferation of IEDs has increased investment in airborne technology to help armed forces find and neutralise the threat. IEDs are considered the major cause of death of coalition and pro-government forces in Afghanistan. To detect IEDs, ground-penetrating radars (GPR) and imaging sensors that work in the infrared (IR) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum were developed. |
