Abstrakt: This article presents a review of Hattori Yoshihisa’s book on agrarian disputes in Alpine Europe, which concentrates on three main areas of history: the history of uprisings, medieval and early-modern agrarian social history, and countries and societies caught up in periods of transition during the medieval and early-modern periods. Hattori’s work analyzes these issues while providing a broad overview of the social conditions -- especially pertaining to law and society -- in the Alpine countries, following in the European-American historiographical trend in conflict studies begun in the 1980s. Hattori adds to previous scholarship by contributing new findings on agricultural village communal groups and by comparing European conditions with those of medieval Japan.
