Abstrakt: This article presents a review of Mori Tadashi’s book on the history of the concept of the right of self defense in international conflicts. Mori begins with the Caroline incident of 1837, in which Great Britain and the United States disagreed on such a right when a dispute broke out due to an incident that occurred in international waters (the Niagra River). From that incident, Mori moves to the 1945 United Nations Charter’s definition of a nation’s self defense before discussing its influence on Japan’s post-World War II rights as stated in the 1951Treaty of San Francisco.
