Abstrakt: | The article focuses on the representations of wives in 18th century Cordel, or Chapbook, literature in Spain. The theme of romance in these poetic compositions is discussed. The Cordels were a subject of debate among the educated elite, who considered them as damaging to moral and social order. Cordel literature was popular during the 18th century within all sectors of Spanish society, and featured satirical representations of women being the source of all marital problems. |
