The article focuses on the latifundio land-tenure system in 18th century Nueva Vizcaya (New Spain). The author reconstructs economic and social conditions in New Spain's northern frontier region based on personal documents belonging to colonial political and military figure Manuel San Juan de Santa Cruz. He discusses the land purchasing strategies used by Manuel San Juan, in the context of land tenure and land occupation practices in the Spanish colonies, and considers the military character of his approach to organizing and managing his estate. |
