The article discusses the decline in Asian turtle species resulting from Chinese commerce. The destruction of the turtles' habitat and their collection for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and food markets brought about the Asian Turtle Crisis. The author says that China has an age-old tradition of consuming turtles as either food or medicine for many illnesses. The country's opening up to western markets improved the buying power of Chinese peoples leading to an increased demand for turtles as a medicinal ingredient and as a preferred food. |
