Abstrakt: The article presents an examination into the history of the World's Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WWCTU) and the influence of trans-cultural gender hierarchy attitudes on the participation of Japanese women in the United States and Japan. Background information is given on the WWCTU and its activities in the late 19th-century. Comments are given contrasting the social attitudes of Japan and the United States regarding gender. The ideological conflicts which then arose within Western Christian missionary circles in Japan are discussed in-depth.
