The article discusses the Leech approach to linguistic politeness. It explains that the Leech approach to the politeness principle (PP), which aims to create cordiality and regulate social transactions, focuses on the balance of cost and benefit to both the hearer and the speaker. The article highlights the six maxims of the PP as classified by Leech which includes tact, generosity, and approbation. According to the article, the Leech approach gives no definite concept on how an individual determines the required politeness for any speech act. |
