Abstrakt: | The article examines the experiences of self-identified fat women that influenced their lives as college students in the context of poststructural feminist theory. The discussion focuses on the discursive practices of the manoeuvring of one's physical space on campus, the social construction of subversive subject-positions, and confrontation with the silence around fat people and denial of fatness. The dominant social understanding of femininity is also discussed. The idea that educational institutions contribute to the construction and maintenance of social acceptance norms concerning a woman's body size and her desirability is discussed. |
