Abstrakt: The article examines the controversies surrounding the issue of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in dental students and applicants to Canadian dental schools. A survey of 10 dental schools is reported, which found that 8 schools require successful applicants to give documented evidence of HBV vaccination. It cites the need for such schools to recognize that hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive students training to carry out exposure-prone procedures present an unknown theoretical but possibly important risk of disease transmission to patients.
