Abstrakt: This article gives an introduction to bioluminescence, some case studies of bioluminescent organisms and practical ideas for teachers to explain concepts of light production in the classroom. At the end of these lessons, students should be able to give examples of living organisms that use bioluminescence, explain how light is generated and give reasons as to why living organisms create light. The teaching component of these lessons would be themed classroom discussions and demonstrations of bioluminescent materials for hands-on learning. Assessment may be in the form of individual or small-group student presentations, essays or posters on one of the bioluminescent species examined in class or an exam on the theory studied.
