The article discusses the political activities of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany. The SPD is stated to have emerged as the strongest party in the September 1998 elections. In 1998, the SPD returned to power for the first time since 1982. The party led by Gerhard Schröder formed a coalition government with the Green Party and emphasized on the need to reduce unemployment. The party was founded in the 19th century in order to defend the interests of the working class, but its commitment to goals is stated to have been disputed since 1918. The party was banned by the Nazis in 1933 and was recreated in 1946. Currently, the SPD is stated to be in a dual struggle between national coalition and conservative coalition. |
