This article seeks to illustrate the general picture of the one of the latest local civil Confucian examination of the feudal system in Tonkin through the case study of Nam Dinh. It is approached from the aspects of its history, changes of examination, time of organization, activities related to bureaucratic situations and candidates…Because of certain similar remarks among Confucian examinations at localities under the Nguyen period and based on various descriptions, this article provides readers with an overview over local Confucian examinations at that time. Since most of the Confucian examinations shared the similar features, narratives and descriptions. Not only describing general points of the ordinary exams, the analyses and statistics based on French sources, which are being preserved at the National Archival Centre N01, also reflect the educational situation of the Confucian examinations in the Nguyen time. In addition, this article seeks to highlight social and cultural changes under the impacts of the French Government in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
