The article focuses on women reggae artists. Influenced by artists who adhere to the Rastafarian faith, the reggae music has depicted social commentary against class, ethnic, religious and national oppression. Several artists who have participated in the renaissance of reggae music included Garnett Silk, Buju Banton, Anthony B, and Richie Spice. However, one contradiction of Rastafari-inspired or reggae movement was the resistance to the acceptance of woman as man's equal. Women reggae singers during the 1960s were Hortense Ellis and Marcia Griffiths. The characteristics of the new prototype of the Rastafari-inspired woman include being liberated, articulate, strong yet charming and exuding self confidence and authority. These Rasta-inspired aura may be seen from Queen Ifrica and Etana. |
