Abstrakt: Chapter 4 in the book "Island Sounds in the Global City: Caribbean Popular Music and Identity in New York" is presented. It discusses the dance music called the merengue and its entry into New York society through the influx of immigrants from the Dominican Republic during the 1930s. It also explores the methods adapted by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo to ensure nationalistic pride is instilled in the citizens of the Republic.
