In this article the author examines Pope Julius II and his influence of the paintings of the Vatican Stanza della Segnatura, created by Raphael. It is the author's contention that Julius contributed to a significant degree to the iconography of the cycle of paintings, a position not taken by many scholars of the early 16th century. In drawing his conclusion, the author compares the symbolism of the fresco cycle with the contents of the Pope's library. In addition the author examines the implication that a Julian interpretation of the frescoes might have on the Platonism of the paintings. |
