The authors wish to thank John Williams, former program officer at the Spencer Foundation, who pushed our thinking about building capacity for educational research in and on the South, We also acknowledge the support of Diana Montgomery and Deb Ecker-Rich who assisted in field work and reviewing of initial drafts. We also wish to acknowledge the significant contributions of and partnership with Gary Henry and Darleen Opfer of Georgia State University, who directed the quantitative components of this investigation, and whose accompanying report provides a different, but complimentary angle to our own findings. Finally, we deeply appreciate the guidance and advice from a number of colleagues, Alan Tom from the University of North Carolina, Mark Smylie from the University of Illinois-Chicago, Bruce Haslam from Policy Studies Associates, Charles Thompson of East Carolina University, and Richard Ingersoll from the University of Pennsylvania. Each one offered advice and critique that helped us enormously in the design of our work and/or analysis of our data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
