The article focuses on photographer Samuel Bourne's seven photographic albums which give a glimpse of 19th century colonial photography in India. Detailed are the methods Bourne used in taking pictures including a dry-plate technique called the fothergill process, the albumen process and a large format wet collodion process. The three albums entitled The Sutlej - Indian Groups etc, Views in Cashmere, and The Himalayas which cover his main travels are presented. Also mentioned are the four other albums including Hill Stations of India and Photographs. |
