Abstrakt: In the article, the author discusses how the actual works of Mary Ann Evans also known as George Eliot are against her theories as shown in her novel "Silas Marner." The author also presents Evans' essay "The Natural History of German Life," where she laid down the principles in which the realism of art is based. In the novel, Evans was said to have tried to invent imaginary solutions to social, as well as personal misunderstandings. The views of several writers on the novel, including Q. D. Leavis, are also cited.
